Negotiating Compensation with Confidence & Conviction

We have all heard more than a few times the importance of salary negotiations. Especially for people who typically get paid less in the workplace like women and people of color negotiating salaries is huge. Below are some reminders of good ways to negotiate, without abandoning humility.

Practice!

As recommended by the Battle Tactics for your Sexist Workplace podcast in their episode on negotiation call your cable guy and ask if you are getting the best rate. Remind yourself that you have negotiated before, whether at the market or with your family members. Ask a friend to role play with you, and to simulate tough situations. This also holds you more accountable to following through on your negotiation.

Look at the whole package and know your non-negotiables

Even if they are unable to pay you more, there are other benefits you can ask for. Would extra vacation be helpful? can they offer a higher sign on bonus? and how much autonomy do you have in this role? Remember here that negotiation isn’t a battle, there may be benefits they are happy to give you, and matter more to you then a higher salary.

You’re worth it

Be respectful in your attitude and how you show up, and aware what the questions you ask are saying about you. At the same time also remember to feel confident; you are worthy of the pay you are asking for and can back that up with the skills you hold. While it might sound hard to do both at the same time, being confident and self-aware go hand and hand. This gives you a chance to display your soft skills, which are priceless. Also send that thank you email – manners matter!
