An HR consultant or fractional HR leader gives your company access to senior HR expertise without the cost of a full-time hire. The work varies by stage and need, but typically includes employee handbooks, benefits, policies, hiring strategy, manager development, compensation planning, compliance, performance management, and employee relations. At Reverb, fractional HR leaders can either act as the de facto Head of People for smaller companies or as an extension of a small HR team as organizations grow, handling both day-to-day people operations and longer-term strategy as needed.
A PEO handles payroll, benefits, and basic compliance for a flat per-employee fee. Fractional HR gives you a senior HR leader who works with your team on strategy, manager training, org design, and the complex people decisions a PEO isn’t built to handle.
Most startups should bring in HR support around 25-40 employees. By the time you think you’re ready for HR, you’re usually behind on something that’s already costing you. Fractional HR gives you and your team support without committing to a full-time hire before you’re ready.
Reverb’s fractional HR engagements vary based on the needs of your organization but can start as low as $675 per month for a basic HR Consulting retainer. (Ask us about our discount for nonprofits.) Unlike a PEO, we don’t charge per-employee fees. After a 30-minute scoping call, you’ll get a written proposal with a specific monthly rate and a list of what’s included.
