When Do I Need HR support?

  • You have a few options for covering the People/HR needs at this stage.
  • Many startups have an Office Manager, Coordinator, or Admin handling the day-to-day human resource tasks. These team members often haven’t had much prior HR experience, so it’s important to provide access to a more experienced HR professional which you could do by hiring a Senior HR Consultant on a fractional basis.
  • Another common option is to outsource to an HR Consultant on a fractional basis to get both the strategic and hands on day-to-day tasks from one individual.
  • You will want to have someone internally dedicated to the day-to-day people/HR activities.
  • The level/role for the hire will be dependent on your pace of growth and complexity.
  • The following are considerations for the role at this stage:
    • If you are utilizing an outsourced Senior People Operations Consultant, you can hire an early or mid-career People/HR professional to run the day-to-day, but have an outsourced HR Director/VP level consultant to provide strategic guidance and support for new or more challenging questions/issues that arise.
    • If you are growing rapidly, you could consider hiring your Head of People or HR Director at this stage to begin building out the team ahead of your growth.
  • At this stage you will have 1-2 people on the HR team.
  • We typically use a 50 employees : 1 HR person in the beginning until your company has several hundred employees.
  • As for what roles to add in HR after the Head of HR, it will depend on their expertise and if the company is going to do a lot of sustained hiring.

A: People Operations, or People Ops, is a way of practicing human resources (HR) that focuses on employee development and well-being. Some companies use the name People Operations instead of Human Resources.

A: In many ways, yes. However, People Ops implies a more employee-centric approach.

A: People Ops helps create strategies and policies that ensure all employees have what they need to do their jobs. That can range from tools, to training, and a culture where everyone can do their best work.

A: Absolutely. We would love to learn more about you, and what brings you to Reverb. We’ll work together to identify options and solutions.

A. We are DEIB champions and approach all of our work through the lens of helping companies create healthy, inclusive culture.

A: So many! Working with a consultant can be cheaper in the long run, allowing  you to flex hours up and down depending on your needs. For fewer hours a week / month, we can get the tactical needs of your day to day operations met, as well advise leadership on what’s next. In addition:

  • Our team is senior, independent, and works with limited supervision. They are thought leaders who do hands-on work, strategize with the CEO, and everything in between. 
  • Our senior people operations consultants (HR consultants) have 15+ years of experience and have led HR at smaller companies and/or held senior leadership roles in enterprise organizations.
  • If your consultant is not available (for ex. hiking without cell service) and something urgent comes up, we can quickly find another team member to help.
