Compliance Alert – WA State Salary Threshold for 2024

Kenda Wilson, Senior People Operations Consultant, contributed to this article.

Beginning in 2020, the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries created a schedule to increase the minimum salary threshold for overtime exempt workers. Each year since 2020, the minimum has increased and updates to the schedule happen annually based on the forecasted changes in the Consumer Price Index.

As we head into 2024, it’s time to plan ahead for the new minimum threshold which changes again on January 1, 2024.  For 2024, the threshold for exempt workers is set at at least $1,302.40 per week or $67,724.80 per year. The salary thresholds for overtime exempt workers are a multiplier of the state minimum wage for a 40-hour workweek.

Washington employers that pay computer professionals hourly instead of salary must pay at least three-and-a-half times the hourly minimum wage rate which in 2024 is at least $56.98 per hour.

In 2025, employers with 50+ employees will go up .25% more than those companies with less than 50 employees. The schedule is to continue through 2028 with bigger jumps in the coming years.
